# Pod replication and pairing

> How two pods you own can be paired as primary and replica, and what is replicated.

URL: https://docs.synap.live/docs/build/concepts/pod-replication · Status: beta

## Why replication exists

Synap’s **Data Pod** stores your knowledge graph and event history. Some teams want **two copies** of that history—typically a **primary** pod they use day-to-day and a **replica** (backup, failover candidate, or regional copy).

Replication is built on the **same event log** that powers the rest of Synap: changes become **completed events**, which can be shipped to another pod over HTTPS and **materialized** there. That keeps both sides aligned with the product’s core model: **events are the source of truth**.

## What “pairing” means

**Synap Cloud’s Control Plane** can link **two active pods** you own into a **single pair**: one **primary** and one **replica**.

- Linking is **intentionally pair-shaped** (two pods per link), not an arbitrary mesh in the product UI.
- The Control Plane issues credentials and calls each pod’s sync setup so both sides agree on **who pushes**, **who pulls**, and **shared secrets**.
- Beyond this managed pair, advanced topologies would require **explicit configuration** on the pods themselves.

## What gets replicated

At a high level:

| Area | Typical behaviour |
|------|-------------------|
| **Event log** | Completed events are replicated continuously (fast path) and on a schedule (catch-up). |
| **Workspace scope** | Peers can be limited to specific workspaces when configured. |
| **Large files** | Binary payloads follow **separate scheduled sync** in addition to metadata in the event stream. |

Exact tables and worker names are **implementation details**; the important idea is **metadata + payloads** are both accounted for, with **idempotent** apply on the replica so transient duplicates are safe.

## Trust and boundaries

- Replication is **between pods you configure** (and, for Cloud, pods in your account that you link). It is **not** a silent multi-tenant merge: peers authenticate with **shared secrets** and scoped roles.
- **Conflict policy** is documented for operators as **last-write-wins** at the materialization layer, with audit hooks for conflicts.
- If you need **stronger-than-LWW** semantics for specific entities, that is a **future product** discussion (custom merge rules, CRDTs for selected types, etc.).

## What this does not solve (yet)

- **Arbitrary N-way mesh** (three or more pods in one logical cluster) as a first-class Cloud UI.
- **Interactive conflict resolution UI** for every field—today the system favours **automation and auditability** over manual merge screens.
- **Guaranteed real-time latency SLAs**—the design uses a **fast path plus scheduled catch-up** so brief outages can heal without manual dumps.

## Where to go next

- [Event catalog](/docs/reference/events): the events the log records
- [Backups](/docs/run/backups): off-host snapshots, the other way to keep a second copy
